Many studies have shown that disc disease is the most common cause of back pain costing Americans over $65 BILLION annually. Just as troublesome, nearly 700,000 Americans undergo spinal surgery every year. This can have massive impact on not only a family’s finances, but also their quality of life in the future. A 2006 study from the journal Spine found that just two years later, 60% of patients, both those who chose to have surgery and those who did not have surgery, remained disabled.

What if those patients were given another option?! What if they were told that their disc can HEAL and function properly again?! Advances in spinal traction have brought promising results for patients with disc herniations and degenerative disc disease. By allowing the spine to relax and remove pressure on the injured disc and surrounding nerves, healthy spinal fluid flushes back into the disc and proper function is restored. However, decompression is best considered a continued supportive care when used on its own. Gravity continues to compress the weakened disc and injured spinal muscles over time, thus, a lifetime commitment to spinal alignment and strengthening exercises is critical for the longevity of your disc rehab.

It is important to point out that the muscles surrounding our spine support and maintain the spinal curves and healthy discs. 90% of all disc problems are caused by misalignments of the spine due to weakened postural muscles. But these deep postural muscles aren’t like most muscles- they are part of the autonomic nervous system, just like our heart and lungs. That means they are at work whether you’re thinking about them or not! You don’t have to tell your heart to beat each and every time, or your lungs to take a breath, instead, thank God, those organs work without our thought. The same is true for the deep muscles along our spines. If we choose, we can sit perfectly upright with great posture, but as we get busy and dedicate less concentration to our posture, those muscles revert back to what they’re used to. That being said, regular rehabilitation exercises in Cedar Rapids for our postural muscles is necessary to form the most healthy muscle memory for our spines!

The decompression table we chose for ActiveLife Chiropractic utilizes whole-body vibration- which is another way we influence the muscles surrounding the spine. While laying on the vibrating table, your muscles will fatigue 50% faster than without the vibration- allowing spasmed muscles to relax for a quicker decompression time. The calming effect of the whole-body vibration allows for a more comfortable and effective treatment.

It is important, of course, to point out that treatments vary for individuals depending on the severity of disc injury. Your injury didn’t occur overnight, and neither will your relief. True rehabilitation of an injured disc takes time and effort and will for the rest of your life. But there truly is hope for pain relief. There is hope for increased mobility and quality of life. Allow your body to heal naturally and you will be forever grateful.

Decompression FAQ’s

It can be difficult for an insured disc to heal when it’s constantly under pressure- even when the body is resting. With decompression, the pressure inside the discs can be reduced by gently separating the injured spinal segments. While separated, spinal fluid, nutrients, and oxygen can flow back into the injured disc and begin the rebuilding and repair process of the damaged disc. In addition, reducing the pressure inside of the disc may help draw in a bulging disc and alleviate pressure from surrounding nerves.

We take special care to ease you into treatment, so the discomfort will be minimal. In fact, many people experience an immediate relief of their symptoms once the decompression begins! We will monitor how many pounds of pressure we use at each session to ensure we’re progressing but not overdoing.

Great question! Inversion can appear similar- with the idea of applying traction to one’s spine to reduce symptoms (most often sciatica). The main difference being that the amount of pressure being used with decompression can be closely regulated and modified based on patient comfort level. An inversion table is often all or nothing. Using a decompression table, we’re able to traction from both neck and pelvis- allowing for a full spine and a more effective treatment.

Unfortunately, this treatment is not covered by insurance. Because of this we offer cash discounts for any treatment level. Already a member of ActiveLife Chiropractic? Ask about additional discounts!

It goes without saying that each case is different, so an exact answer can be tough. But, after an exam with the doctor, you’ll have an idea of what to expect for a care plan. In general, 3% of the fluids flushing into the disc are retained following a decompression treatment, so multiple traction sessions will be needed to restore and maintain spinal correction and function.
